Person of the Week

Keith Floyd

On Monday 14 September Keith Floyd passed away at the age of 65. The legendary TV personality and cookery writer had a unique, flamboyant style of presenting which was an inspiration to many, and he is regarded as a pioneer of television cookery programmes. Amongst the many tributes from industry leaders this week, the owners of Floyds Brasserie in Phuket, Thailand, said "He was an inspiration to his Burasari family and we instantly fell in love with his enthusiasm and charm. He did not need nor want a translator. He said, 'cooking and love is a universal language'".

Quote of the Week

"While full recovery of the financial system will take a great deal more time and work, the growing stability resulting from these interventions means we're beginning to return to normalcy. But here's what I want to emphasise today: Normalcy cannot lead to complacency."

"Unfortunately, there are some in the financial industry who are misreading this moment. Instead of learning the lessons of Lehman and the crisis from which we're still recovering, they're choosing to ignore those lessons. I'm convinced they do so not just at their own peril, but at our nation's. So I want everybody here to hear my words: We will not go back to the days of reckless behaviour and unchecked excess that was at the heart of this crisis, where too many were motivated only by the appetite for quick kills and bloated bonuses. Those on Wall Street cannot resume taking risks without regard for consequences, and expect that next time, American taxpayers will be there to break their fall."

US Michelin Guide builds campaign around secret reviewers

Reviewers will post items on Twitter

With new Michelin Guides due for publication in New York and San Francisco during the month of October, a promotional campaign is being launched centred upon the "famously anonymous" individuals who review restaurants

  • In addition to an advertising campaign posing the question, "Who's the famously anonymous inspector?", the reviewers themselves will post items to Twitter including information about places they are dining, advance critiques of chefs and complaints about their service.
  • Director, Jean-Luc Naret comments, "There's kind of a Da Vinci Code, a little James Bond feel, to know who they are and how they go about working and your imagination tends to run wild with it."
  • In New York the Michelin Guide competes with the Zagat Survey and was launched comparatively recently in 2006. Will this 'puzzle' prove to be a boost for the famed publication?
